It took me quite a while to learn this very important rule: Give First.
The rule is as simple to execute as it is to understand. All you need to do is first seek to give to others before you can expect to receive. Helping others will yield results to you. That doesn’t mean that every person you help will turn around and help you. What that means is that by helping others, you’re building trust and creating the basis for a lasting relationship.
Especially networking when most people venture into the room with a skeptical attitude, you want to not do anything to appear as though you’re there completely for yourself.
Here are a couple of points why giving first is a great idea:
- Builds a great brand;
- People want to help those who help others;
- You get satisfaction based on something you control (helping) opposed to something you cannot control (making the sale);
- You create advocates instead of customers.
